joke of the day
“But doctor,” lamented the young husband in counseling, “whenever Sue and I quarrel, she becomes historical.” “You mean, hysterical,” said the doctor.
“No, historical. She is always digging up my past.”
Alone
Everyone is trying to wrap their brain around reasons a human being would walk into a crowded movie theater and start killing innocent people. It is hard, if not impossible, to apply our rational minds to such madness.
Psychology today, in an article called "A Lonely Killer Strikes Again," says the main reason that drives mass murderers to commit their atrocities, is loneliness. They say the lack of community in these killers means:
- they have no social bearings -- they don't guide their behavior by how it impacts others' lives;
- they have little to nothing to lose in terms of social esteem, initimacy, family ties;
- they have time on their hands -- and minds -- to allow their feelings of rejection to fester;
- and they have no one to tell their problems to who can comfort them.
Consider how neighbors describe the Colorado movie killer suspect, James Holmes to the NY Times:
"James Eagan Holmes, the suspect who the police say brought terror to this Colorado community, had been a shy, awkward boy. . . . Neighbors. . . described him as a solitary figure, always alone as he bought beer and liquor at neighborhood shops, ate burritos or rode his bicycle through the streets."
Dr. Stanton Peele in Psychology Today believes that loneliness "makes people more likely to commit anti social acts."
Conclusion: Make some friends!
Why the Hate?
What's going on in America? Is it the heat? The lack of cable channels? Why are we so angry? A new survey found 2/3rds of American teens admit to angry outbursts, rage, anger attacks, and having an explosive temper. The lead author of the study says it's clear we need to take the matter more seriously. He believes today's teens never developed the appropriate coping skills to deal with the rage. So what should parents do?
- Have a plan for the next time he/she has an outburst
- Come up with consequences. Things that have deep meaning with your kids
- Talk your child about the outburst after the fact to help them identify and avoid triggers
- Discuss what they should do differently the next time they are angry

Her Day Would've Been Perfect...then came FACEBOOK!
There you are -- your wedding day. The day you've planned for months, or even more. You hire the perfect photographer who snaps the perfect pictures at the perfect time.
Here's the problem... everyone else is snapping photos, too, but with their smart phones. They get the not so perfect shots, too, like you shoving a piece of chicken in your mouth. And then guess where that photo ends up? That's right...Facebook!
A new survey found 75% of brides said photos of their wedding ended up on Facebook, and a majority were not happy with how they looked in the pictures!
Solution: Let it go. Everything ends up on Facebook -- you can't control the monster.
Yikes
The CDC reported last week that 1 in 13 women consume alcohol while pregnant, and 1 in 70 binge drink. Who is more likely to have a sip while preggers? Older women, believe it or not. Women between 35 and 44 were most likely to drink while preggers, but it was the younger women that were more likely to binge drink.
