My One Little Tweak that Has Made Me a Better Performer

Good morning, my friend! Cheers to a terrific show and another day of employment in radio! Woo hoo!

I was reading this list of the 8 habits of highly productive people, and a couple of 'em made me laugh. I'm not saying they don't make sense -- they just don't apply to my life.

...they start their day off on the right foot...

"According to a recent study at the Fisher College of Business at Ohio State University, if an employee is in a bad mood when they arrive at work-whether because of familial problems or a stressful commute-it can decrease their productivity by as much as 10% that day. So unless you come in to the office every day in a great mood (and who does?), start your day with 5 to 10 minutes of time dedicated to decompressing. "Create a ritual. Maybe it's meeting in the coffee break room or going around the office to greet everyone. It doesn't matter what you do, as long as you foster a sense of connection [with your coworkers]," Says Holhbaum."

Right! Here's my day. Up at 2:30am to hang with my wife (she's a morning anchor) until she leaves at 3. Scan some prep. Shower - eat - wait for the babysitter to show up at 4:30, then zip out the door. I'm pulling my headphones out of my backpack as I enter the studio.  On the air at 5am.

There's no time to greet everyone on the floor. Caffeine is my "ritual." That's why the prep you see is laid out the way it is -- for quick execution. Here's one from the list that make a lot of sense to me, though:

...make mindful food choices...

They go on to talk about avoiding heavy mid-day meals. But, for what we do, I think the most important meal of the day is breakfast. Over the last year I've started preparing a protein-packed breakfast (omelet packed with spinach covered with salsa!) the night before. I make one for myself and my wife. Eating that before work has improved my performance dramatically. Don't go on the air hungry -- that's a buzz kill.

Here's the full list:

8 Habits of Highly Productive People
1. They make it a point to take breaks.
2. They start their day off on the right foot.
3. They make mindful food choices.
4. They keep a flexible to-do list.
5. They use technology with intent.
6. They balance their workload.
7. They put perfectionism in its place.
8. They know how to say "no."

Have you tweaked your life in a way that has helped what you do on the radio? Please share!

Joke of the Day

A man needing some legal help walks into a law firm. He asks an attorney, "If I give you $300 per hour to help answer two legal problems I have, will you help me?"

The attorney replies "Sure, what's the other question?"

And the Job With the Shiniest Heads Goes to...

A new survey found the baldest guys work in sales. 60% of sellers say they have lost their hair, or at least have started to, because of stress from the job.

Most say they had a full head of hair when they started (sure!) but lost it all after the pressure to sell became more intense in a difficult economy.

Sellers are number one on the shiny head list, with web developers second, followed by software engineers in third.

Fact: Hair loss affects 40% of men under 35.

Get Used to Us, Ladies!

We've all gotten used to the notion that a woman will outlive the man in her life... or will she? Get this -- new research found that not only will men today live as long as women, but younger boys could go on to surpass a female's life span.

If boys born in the last decade reach 30, they can expect to live to 87.1 -- the same average for a woman.

Reasons include fewer men working in heavy industry, fewer men smoking, and better treatment for heart disease.

So get used to us ladies -- we're here to annoy you for many, many years.

Hiding Is Not An Exercise

A survey from the mental health charity Mind found 9 out of 10 women are scared to exercise outdoors for fear of looking unattractive. Many resort to waiting until the sun sets to get in a walk or run, and that can't be safe.

Problem solved!

Other research from Dove found 13% of women have no problem with their appearance, and even call themselves "beautiful."

But other research discovered that a nice compliment beat sex, shopping and even chocolate when it comes to boosting their mood.

I'll Have What She's Having

You've got to be kidding -- Virginia Fike, 44, from Clarke County, Virginia, bought a Powerball ticket early in the day on April 7th. She went back to the same store later in the day to buy a Mega Millions, but accidentally bought another Powerball using the same numbers. Both tickets turned out to be winners -- $1-MILLION EACH.

The winning numbers she picked were based on the marriage of her parents. They wed May 13 when her mother was 17 and her father was 20. She picked 5-13-17-20-30.

She plans to pay off some bills first, and then consult a financial expert to help her out with what's left.

Phones/Facebook: Virginia Fike won twice on the same day with the Powerball lottery - $1-million each. She meant to buy one Powerball and one Mega Millions, but accidentally bought two Powerball tickets. Have you ever had a mistake that turned out to be awesome?

That's it!
