The biggest weight loss scams of the past year... you didn't fall for one of these, did you? (insert your blog address)

Scam City
Today is Rid the World of Fad Diets and Gimmicks Day which kicks off Healthy Weight Week and the Slim Chance Awards honoring the WORST weight loss products of the year. The winners for 2010:

WORST CLAIM: Ultimate Cleanse

Ultimate Cleanse combines cascara sagrada, a harsh laxative that in 2002 was banned as an ingredient in over-the-counter drugs, in a mix of herbs and fibers said to produce “2-3 bowel movements per day, while sweeping, toning, and cleansing the digestive and eliminative system.” An Arizona man who used Ultimate Cleanse is suing the maker and seller charging that it caused perforation of his colon requiring two operations; his surgeon believes the perforation was caused by cascara segrada.

WORST PRODUCT: HCG Supplements

HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), a hormone produced during pregnancy, is claimed to reset the hypothalamus, improve metabolism and mobilize fat stores. However, there is no scientific evidence supporting HCG treatment as a weight or fat loss strategy. In its herbal versions, HCG drops are placed under the tongue (5 drops times 6 times a day or 10 drops, 3 times). The ads claim you can lose 2 pounds per DAY safely. But! The program requires you to semi-starve on a 500 calorie a day diet. Common side-effects include fatigue, headache, mood swings, depression, confusion, dizziness and stomach pain.

Most Outrageous: Basic Research LLC

Basic Research, marketer of bogus products, carries an extensive history of FTC warnings, charges, fines and on-going lawsuits against multiple products. Basic Research, also doing business as Carter-Reed Company, has been a plaintiff or defendant in more than 40 suits filed in federal court in the past five years. Most recently, Basic Research is being sued for false advertising in marketing "Jillian Michaels Maximum Strength Calorie Control" (take two capsules before main meals and you weight).

WORST GIMMICK: Lapex BCS Lip Laser

LipoLaser promoters promise: “Lose 3 ½ - 7 inches of fat in 3 weeks. … proven inches lost, without diet or exercise … Supposedly, shining the lighted device on a pocket of fat gives results “almost exactly the same as exercise” only instead of “hormones opening the fat cells with exercise, the Laser light opens the fat cells—right through your skin. The same stuff comes out of the fat cells.” The FDA classifies the device as an infrared lamp rather than a laser, so likely it is harmless. Yet the price is hefty: $1497.

That hot blonde in your office may be beautiful, but she's not as smart as... oh wait...yes she is. Read this! (insert your blog address)

Hot AND Smart, DANG IT!
New research proves beauty and brains live in sweet, sweet harmony. According to the London School of Economics, people that are considered physically blessed have IQ's 14 points above average. They also say that (duh) good lookin' people tend to hook up with other good lookin' people and pass all that goodness down to their good lookin' kids. ''Physical attractiveness is significantly positively associated with general intelligence," according to a researcher, (but) "it is not a prescription for how to treat or judge others."

Questions!
-What is good looking? Is Sarah Jessica Parker beautiful? Ask 3 men and 3 women and you may get several different answers!
-Are good looking people smart because they know how to use their hot looks to get what they want?
-Does success and power make you APPEAR better looking?

-I love the final quote in this article: "Our contention that beautiful people are more intelligent is purely scientific"

Do video games REALLY melt your kid’s brain? A new study found out...the results here (insert your blog address)

Big Warning -- VIDEO GAMES!
It seems like there's been an endless debate over the effect of video games on children, and everyone has an opinion. Where do you stand? Do video games have no influence, some influence, or a great deal of influence on a kid's behavior?

According to a study out yesterday, heavy gamers have a very, very rough road ahead. The study followed several thousand elementary to middle school children over a two year period and concluded more gaming = lower social competence and greater impulsivity. The end result is depression, anxiety, social phobias, and lower school performance.

Researchers say 9% of kids fell into this category. The video game lobby is fighting back saying there's no concrete evidence that video games cause harm, and in fact, actually IMPROVE our lives. You can read the full response here.

A couple of interesting forum responses:

"I neither disagree or agree with the report but it should be pointed out the tobacco industry was insistent cigarettes were safe for ages. Just because the ESA (video game lobby) disagrees doesn't mean there is no truth to it."

"I think they COULD potentially lead to more aggressive behavior, but not any more than music, movies, or books could"

"...Any thing can be addictive, do all things in moderation."

Joke Of the Day

Before a burglary trial, the judge explained to the defendant, “You can let me try your case, or you can choose to have a jury of your peers.”
The man thought for a moment. “What are peers?” he asked.
“They’re people just like you – your equals.”
“Forget it,” retorted the defendant. “I don’t want to be tried by a bunch of thieves.”
