Today is Take A Walk Outdoors Day along with Get to Know Your Customers Day. Of course then second is hard to do if you're busy doing the first. Today is also Women's Healthy Weight Day and Women in Blue Jeans Day to celebrate women who work on a farm. Not sure if playing Farmville counts, but who's gonna care -- go for it!

Life...Uplugged
How hard would it be to convince your kids to completely give up the Internet, TV, iPods, cell phones, and video games? One mom managed to do it, and she wrote about the results in a new book called "The Winter of Our Disconnect." Susan Maushart spent 6-months gadget free with her kids and says the results were incredible:

  • Her son, a video game and TV addict, filled his time playing the saxophone and is now studying music in college.
  • Her oldest daughter found the transition easy and now, given the choice, only signs onto Facebook from time to time.
  • Her youngest daughter, who had the hardest time giving up the gadgets, saw a dramatic improvement in her grades.

Maushart wrote that her kids "awoke slowly from the state of cognitus interruptus that had characterized many of their waking hours to become more focused logical thinkers."

Could you give it up? How long do you think you'd last?

Dating... 2011 Style!
A joint effort by Yahoo and Maxim magazine sought to get the reality of dating in 2011. It's pretty interesting. Most men (think they) are old fashioned, while women don't seem to care. What do more women than ever care about? If their man can keep up while playing video games! Read on...

  • A quarter of respondents said that they use social media to facilitate dating—and 40 percent admitted that they judge you by what's on your profile.
  • 70 percent of daters would rather meet someone in person than online.
  • Facebook is fine, but the vast majority of people (75 percent) prefer a post-date follow-up by phone—and 85 percent of daters want to hear from you in some way within three days of the date.
  • Personality was the most important criteria for daters (84 percent), beating out brains (69 percent), shared interests or hobbies (65 percent), and looks (60 percent).
  • While 55 percent of women said that chivalry didn't matter much to them, 69 percent of guys consider themselves to be old-fashioned gentlemen, and are more than willing to get the door for you—and, possibly, pick up the check as well
  • Men spend about twice as much on dates as women do—about $80 per date compared to $40
  • Women said they prefer dates involving an activity, including bowling, going to the movies, or taking a walk together, while men leaned towards dinner and drinks, especially in the early stages of a relationship.
  • 39 percent of women said that it's a turn-on when guys list "video games" as a personal interest.

Newbies: So what did you think of the premiere of the 10th season of American Idol last night? Is Simon going to be missed? Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez, and Randy Jackson took over the judge's table, and People.com says they came across less like judges and more like a morning news team.  "Jennifer Lopez's hair was immaculate, and Steven Tyler wore a colorfully clashing variety of patterns and jewelry." The meanest any of them got was when Tyler asked a contestant if they ate a lot of paint chips as a child. It'll be an interesting season to watch.

Not True: Hilary Duff cleared up a rumor yesterday via Twitter -- "Wow what a way to wake up and find out your pregs! It's just a rumor guys! Not true." The reaction came after a tabloid report claimed she and hubby Mike Comrie were expecting their first child.
