radios showprep: healthy kids hang with dogs, signs you're going to cheat, and women rule facebook

Hey guys... well, I did it. I got the little guy off to his first day of kindergarten yesterday... check out the stress on his face.

My wife and Charlie

He was a champ, though. He walked into class, took a seat, and with wide eyes, stared straight ahead awaiting further instructions from the teacher.

My wife shed a tear as we left. I was ok. I lost it the night before, though, when I spied on him playing with his Thomas the Tank Engine train table. He was down on his knees running a train over the tracks. Just three years ago, when we gave him that table, he had to stand up on both feet just to reach the track. It truly is amazing how life can escape us, so enjoy the little things. The day to day things.

Anyway, on with today's prep...

Joke of the Day

A visitor from Holland was chatting with his American friend and was jokingly explaining about the red, white and blue in the Netherlands flag. “Our flag symbolizes our taxes,” the man said. “We get red when we talk about them, white when we get our tax bill, and blue after we pay them.” “That’s the same with us, the American said, “only we see stars, too.”

Looking for a Job?  Spell Check Your Facebook Page!

Get this -- a whopping 92% of employers are using social networks to find talent in 2012!  A new survey found 3 out of 4 hiring managers are checking candidates Facebook and Twitter profiles -- and they're not impressed.  61% say they're not impressed with your clever use of profanity and 54% would recommend taking a grammar and spelling class.

Oh, and you may think it looks cool to friends when you brag about how drunk you got over the weekend, but half the people that could hire you read it and move on to the next candidate.

The L.A. Times put it best:  "Always best to remember, you are what you tweet."

Speaking of:  If you'd like to laugh (and cry) at the same time, follow @cheesecasadia on twitter.  He retweets classic misspellings.  A few examples:

  • "Wish I can grow a goat tee"
  • "All I wanna know is if the marridge survived"
  • "I sprayed his colon on my wrist today & all I can smell is him" (the colon/cologne mix-up is a very common retweet -- and always funny)
  • "Sleep is not my friend, drinking shampain"
  • "I'm greatful that I've got a hi self of steam"
  • "I smell like a complete man since Dion sprayed his colon on me"
  • "So I just made a bandaid out of a piece of toilet paper, rubbing alcohol, and some tape. I am a genious."
  • "omg balancing my tea on the corner of my laptop! i am a genious!"
  • "I rememberize people's voicemail thingy because my mom never answers."

There are many, many more genious's out there, check 'em out here

Healthy Kids Hang with Dogs

This just in from Science:  Healthier kids have dogs.  It's true!  It seems dirty little Fido is good for your baby.  The study found that kids with dogs were healthy 73% of the time, vs 65% of the time for kids with no dog around the home.  Why you ask?  Your dog's dirty mouth and paws get the credit.  It seems all that dirt and bacteria the dogs bring into the home is good for the baby.  Dirt and bacteria build up a a kid's immune system.

Take that, cat people!

6 Indications You're About to Cheat

1   A call from an old friend (translation:  an old flame.  avoid them)
2   A fragile relationship situation (your marriage is rocky at the moment)
3   Hiding that you are already taken
4   Enjoying and then craving flirtatious talking
5   Meetings in private places to talk about personal topics
6   Adding liquor to the mix

Facebook/phones:  That pretty much covers it...or did they miss one?

Wine Makes Me Itch

We keep hearing about the health benefits from wine, but did you know that almost 10% of women say wine makes them itch?  It's called wine intolerance, and the allergy-like symptoms come mostly from a glass of red wine.  The most common reactions include having nasal congestion, fleeing flushed, or feeling itchy.

Thank goodness my wife doesn't have that problem with wine... it's another drink I worry about:

Women Rule (Facebook)

Some interesting results from a study about how men and women use Facebook, Twitter, or any other social networking site.

  • If social network users formed their own country, it would be the eighth largest in the world)
  • 56% of social network users in this country are women
  • That translates to 81 million women, enough to fill every sports stadium int he U.S. more than 7 times
  • Women rule both Twitter (64%) and Facebook (58%).  Oh, and Pinterest (82%), but that's just kind of a given, right?
  • Men rule Reddit, Google and Linked In
  • Nice job guys:  Men are twice as likely as women to post something that they later regret
  • Main reason we use social networking sites:  To stay in touch with family
  • Women  over 55 spend more time playing online games than males aged 15 to 34.
