Joke of the Day

A family went to a hospital, where one of their relatives would be having a brain transplant. One of the relatives asked, "What will the cost of a new brain be?" The doctor replied, "A female brain costs $25,000 and a male brain costs $50,000."

The men smirked, but one of the females asked, "Why is that, doctor?"

"Well," the doctor replied,” the female brain is less because it has been used."

Worst Money Mistake: Falling In Love

Music bed: Money Money Money

Music Bed: I ain't got no money...

We all make money mistakes, but according to the financial gurus at Oprah.com, one of the worst money mistakes we can make is falling in love!

Why? Because there are things you spend money on, and things that you cheap-out on. Then you meet Mr. Right, and he has his own ideas of things to spend money on and things to cheap-out on. Do your ideas mesh, or are they completely opposite. Being opposite can drain your accounts. Solution: Come up with a list of things you both value and build a budget to achieve those goals.

Resentment will build, though, if you ask your partner to stop doing things that make him happy..

Here are five other mistakes we make:
  1. You Paid Too Much in Fees
  2. You Started to Pay Extra on Your Mortgage to Pay Off Your House Early
  3. You Forgot What Pampering Yourself Really Means
  4. After a Financial Crash, You Transferred Your Savings to "Safe" Investments
  5. You Used Your Debit Card to Pay for Gas, an Appliance, a Rental Car, Reserve a Hotel Room or Anything Online

Work Rules You Should Break

Drop: ...15 minutes of actual work

Remember all that stuff your dad told you about making it in the "real world?" Most of it makes sense, the rest is garbage. Real Simple Magazine has 3 work rules that you should ignore:

Stay away from emotional topics: Even if it's personal and awkward, you should always bring a problem out into the open. Doing it early before it spirals out of control

Live at the office: Sometimes your best ideas hit you when you're in the garden, on a bike, or at the gym. Get out of the office.

Climb the career ladder: Bigger titles mean more stress. It's okay to not want a promotion. Make a lateral move or choose self-employment if that will make you happy.

Cheap or Frugal?

Is it OK to use a coupon on a first date? 77% of people have no problem using a coupon on a first date. GalTime asked men and women on the street --

Phones/Facebook: Forget a date -- what if it were business? If a manager took you out to dinner, and used a coupon, would that bother you? If it were a job interview, would that tell you something about the manager?  Can you think of another situation where it's better to leave the coupon book at home?

Number of the Day

Number of the day 7 in 10: Number of women that have attempted a weight loss program in the past three years. At 60%, men aren't too far behind.

The Good News: Americans Living Longer. The Bad News...

The CDC released their annual state of the union's heath, and yes, we're living longer, but we're also getting bigger. Here's where we stand:

  • Men are living to 76, which is up 6 years since 1980. Women are living to 81, up four years over the same time span.
  • Most common killer (a quarter of all deaths each year) for both men and women: Heart disease.
  • Deaths from stroke dropped by a third for men and women.
  • Cancer deaths dropped by 15% for men; 11% for women.
  • Even though the percentage has gone down since the 1990's, nearly 1/2 with high blood pressure are doing nothing about it.
  • Obesity: Up in all age groups since 1994. One-fifth of adults are obese along with 20% of kids
  • Only half of adults get what the government thinks is enough physical activity.
  • Drug poisoning deaths have doubled between 2000 and 2008. Opioid (oh-pee-oid) painkillers take up 40% of those deaths.
  • Coverage: Private health insurance covered a third of personal health care expenses. 14% came out of pocket, while the rest was paid for by Medicare, Medicaid, and others.

Phones/Facebook: Finish the sentence: Our obesity problem could easily be solved by __________

Drop: Fingers too fat
