If you're getting divorce insurance, how serious can you be about the marriage?
Pre-nups are so yesterday -- today it's DIVORCE INSURANCE! Yes, a payout if you can't make the marriage work.
WedLock was thought up by a North Carolina man burned financially by a split from his wife. $16/month gets you $1250 of coverage. You must be together at least four years, though, if you want to cash in on the policy.
So how do people feel about insurance on a relationship?
Relationship expert Julie Nise says it's "completely contrary to everything a marriage should be." It shows a complete lack of commitment and maturity.
But Ted Edwards, an attorney, says it's only prudent to hedge your bets. "It's set up for someone who is going to be in long term relationship," and not a couple planning on having it go the wrong way."
Who's right?
Wait... he's LOADED? Ever know someone that was secretly RICH?
To the folks in Pleasant Hill, MO, Nelson Gipson was an ordinary fella who walked around town in a tattered old flannel shirt and jeans. He spent his days working for the Social Security Administration, and spent Sunday's playing organ in his church.
He died of cancer in May of 2009. He was 82... and he was LOADED! He didn't reveal the news until the day before he died, and the town was in shock. He told a lawyer where he wanted his money to go:
He died of cancer in May of 2009. He was 82... and he was LOADED! He didn't reveal the news until the day before he died, and the town was in shock. He told a lawyer where he wanted his money to go:
-$350-thousand to his church
-$120-thousand to the town's historical society
-$800-thousand to the University of Kansas
The town was shocked. Gipson graduated from KU with a degree in business, and obviously knew how to invest in the stock market. He died with no wife or kids.
Anyone know a Nelson Gipson?

5 Personal Finance Lessons From Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps

There are lessons we can learn from Mr. "Greed Is Good" Gordon Gekko. Of course, how far he stretched those lessons landed him 23-years in prison... just a warning. From GoBankingRates.com, here are the 5:
5. Have A Plan
Quote: "When you don't know what you're doing, it's fatal, Mr. Moore." ("Bretton James" - James Brolin)
If you apply the basic idea to personal finance, it's actually very sage advice. You should always know what you're doing with your money, and in turn, know what you're actually investing in.
4. Manage Calculated Risks
Quote: "If it weren't for people who took risks, where would we be in this world?" ("Jacob Moore" - Shia Lebeouf)
In order to achieve an attractive return, you have to accept a certain level of risk. There's a reason most people can't retire on savings account interest alone. How much risk you're willing to tolerate, however, is entirely up to you.
3. Greed is Legal, Maybe Not So Good
Quote: Someone reminded me I once said greed is good. Now, it seems it's legal. ("Gekko" - Michael Douglas)
But while it is legal, the things that it drives people to do may not be. For example, running a ponzi scheme like Bernie Madoff did, or committing financial fraud like what the SEC accused Goldman Sachs of doing.
2. Time Is Money
Quote: "If there's one thing I learned in prison, it's that money is not the prime commodity in our lives...time is." (Gekko)
Whether it's you or your money, every idle second is money and opportunity lost.
1. Money Never Sleeps
Quote: "Money never sleeps pal. I just made $800,000 in Hong Kong gold. It's been wired to you--play with it. You done good, but you gotta keep doing good. I showed you how the game works, now school's out." (Gekko)
The quote is especially true if you're sophisticated enough to invest in foreign markets, because people are actually awake over there when you're usually sleeping.

JOKE OF THE DAY
A young girl was so nervous about the cruise that immediately after being shown to her cabin, she headed for the bar.
Four hours later she bumped into a steward. “ ‘Scuse me.’ She said hiccuping, “I, I can’t seem to find my cabin.”
“I’ll be glad to help you, ma’am. What’s the number?”
“I dunno,” she answered, “but if you show me aroun’, I’ll recognize it from the lighthouse just outside the porthole.”

Here's a fun little program that's in beta, meaning it still smells brand news (so there might be some bugs to work out). 0Boxer.com is a Chrome and Safari Extension (with more browsers coming soon) that makes it fun to organize your email. You get points for clearing your email box. There's even a leaderboard - so you're actually in competition with other people to keep your email box clean. If you're completely disorganized, making it a game may help.
