Radio Personalities and Sleep; Two Natural Enemies

"30 percent of employed U.S. adults reported getting less than six hours of sleep a night, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in its report."

During a recent trip to Boston I got 8 hours of sleep -- in a row! Oh sure I woke up several dozen times thinking I was late for something, but still, I was in bed for 8 hours. Pretty dang impressive.

Here's the crazy result... I was in a great mood all day! Imagine that! If only it could be like that every day. But no. I chose radio. That's why this survey in Live Science is interesting, because what some view as a problem, I see as something different -- a society where 70% of us are getting more than 6 hours a night! That's pretty dang good, because it ain't happening in radio.

Proof -- just walk down any hallway after 10am, and watch what crawls out of the studios. Zombies that just signed off the air. I'm one of those zombies, except this zombie now has children, which makes the problem even worse!

Science tells us fatigue messes with your head. It makes you work harder for that thought, that joke, and that cheerful delivery. So what do you do? Let's say you had to take a pack of listeners to the Lady Gaga concert Thursday night, and then be back on the air by 5 the next morning. How do you jolt your brain into action?

I found a list of GREAT tips from wikihow.com on how to grab some quick energy when its needed most. Here are a few tips:

Get active - grab a basketball, take a bike ride, or dance.

Drink water - staying hydrated gives you energy

Breathe Deeply - gives your body a chance to regain awareness

Yoga - Yoga apparently is a fast way to regain energy

Energy food - eat bananas or other healthy snacks that release energy over an extended period of time

***My fav**** Pour cold water over each wrist - It gets the blood circulating

Drink a cup of ice, or pour it down your back/pants - um, okay.

Do small tasks first - saves your energy for the bigger stuff later

Don't procrastinate - get the work done and then have fun

Wash cold water over your face

All of those make pretty good sense, except the one where you dump ice down your shorts. If you're that tired, seriously,  take the rest of the morning off and fall asleep in your office.

There ya go! As for me, it's off to bed, a place I should have been hours ago, and up again in 4 1/2 hours. Woo hoo! Have a great show!
