Today is World Nerd Day...

... celebrating those who enjoy playing with words (and your MINDS!   Mmmm wwaaahhh ha ha ha ha!).  Today is also Clean Off Your Desk Day, National Peculiar People Day (which around here we call...Monday), and, of course, everyone's favorite holiday -- National Sturdy Flat-Heeled Shoes Appreciation Day.

Today is also Woman's Suffrage Day which marks the introduction of the Susan B Anthony Amendment into the U.S. Senate on this day in 1878.  It was signed into law 42 years later.

Tears of Rejection
Tears are the biggest buzz kill weapon you have!  In a recent study, researchers discovered that tears contain chemicals that send certain signals.  Signals that, believe it or not, make women less appealing to men.  How did they discover this?  They asked men to sniff the tears of women while watching images of the women on a computer screen.  The "chemosignals" triggered a decline in testosterone, which made a man's empathy for the woman go up while his sexual attraction vanished.  Researchers are now trying to find out what exactly that chemical is...

...so they can bottle it up in spray form and sell to housewives around the world

Do They Work?
Week 2 -- still heading to the gym today? Yes you are! C'mon...LET'S GOOO! Of course, it's best not to listen to every piece of workout advice you read in a fitness magazine. The Guardian breaks down advice that works, and advice to ignore.

  • Stick photographs on your fridge/mirror: Does it work? NO! Putting up old photographs make you feel too miserable to work out.
  • Plan ahead. Does it work? YES! If you're busy, plan your workouts. Early mornings, lunch times or longer on the weekends, perhaps.
  • Go public. Does it work? NO! Telling family and friends that you want to get fit doesn't work because MOST PEOPLE WANT TO YOU FAIL! It makes them feel better about themselves.
  • Get an exercise buddy: Does it work? YES! Rivalry with your buddy makes you work harder, plus you feel duty-bound to keep your workout date.
  • Keep an exercise record: Does it work? NO! The hours you spend graphing your workout routine could be better spent...working out!
  • Make it social: Does it work? YES! Join a team, it's motivating. Plus you'll make some new drinking buddies.
  • Keep it varied: Does it work? YES! Try some new things. A new sport or a new gym, for example.
  • Set goals: Does it work? Maybe. Don't just plan on running a marathon. It won't be fun unless you've accomplished smaller goals, like a 5K or 1/2 marathon. Big goals can be counter-productive.
  • Get the buzz: Does it work? YES! Stick with the workout until you get an endorphin high.
  • Enjoy yourself: Does it work? YES! Try new things until you find something you really enjoy.
