movie monday
The Dark Knight Rises was easily the #1 movie over the weekend bringing in $65 million. That was a pretty big drop for its second weekend compared to The Dark Knight (2008). What's to blame? A writer for Hollywood.com says it wasn't the Colorado shootings that kept people home, but the opening ceremonies to the Olympics on Friday night. Top five:
1. "The Dark Knight Rises," $64 million. ($122.1 million international.)
2. "Ice Age: Continental Drift," $13 million. ($49.4 million international.)
3. "The Watch," $13 million.
4. "Step Up Revolution," $11.8 million. ($5.2 million international.)
5. "Ted," $7.4 million. ($2.7 million international.)

joke of the day
A man takes his place in the theater, but his seat is too far from the stage.
He whispers to the usher, "This is a mystery, and I have to watch a mystery close up. Get me a better seat, and I'll give you a handsome tip."
The usher moves him into the second row, and the man hands the usher a quarter.
The usher looks at the quarter, leans over and whispers, "The wife did it."
Happy Olympics!
Woo hoo! The 2012 Summer Olympics kicked off this weekend from London... What's your favorite sport? A sports media company seems to think we love women's gymnastics the most, but a close second is live pigeon shooting. Don't laugh, that was once an Olympic sport! Back in 1900, the live pigeon shooting competition brought down 300 birds and was "a bloody mess" at the Paris Olympics. That was the one and only year for live pigeon shooting.
Here are some other strange Olympic events throughout history
Club swinging -- not picking up babes at nightclubs, but actually swinging heavy clubs around and around
Tug of war -- that's exciting TV! Too bad they eliminated it in 1920
Solo synchronized swimming -- Made its debut in 1984 and was last seen in 1992.
Swimming obstacle course -- Swimmer had to climb over boats, swim under things and then climb up a pole. This was another event that was halted after the 1900 Paris games. I'd like to see this one come back! Maybe throw in some sharks to spice it up a bit!
Roller hockey -- 1992 was the one and only year for roller hockey
La Canne -- it's like fencing, but with a walking stick. No, you won't see it this year.
Rope climbing -- this classic gym activity was eliminated after 1932.
Trampoline -- I loved this competition in 2000! And yes, it's back!
Race walking -- This is another one you'll see in the next couple weeks, and to prevent the competitors from running, they must have one foot on the ground at all times. It's fun to watch this competition because it looks like a bunch of people that are racing to the bathroom... GET OUT OF MY WAAAAAY!

Bragger!
Is it ever okay to brag? Not really, according to psychologist Susan Speer, who believes almost all forms of bragging will get you into trouble except one...
If you must brag about your accomplishments, here's the only way you should approach it: Quote what someone else said about you during a conversation. The person listening can now imagine a situation in which someone said something positive about you. To give your story credibility, back up your conversation with evidence. For example, if you're bragging to your friend about your boss saying your cupcakes were awesome, it helps if your friend was eating a cupcake during the conversation.
Check out the six unacceptable forms of bragging here
Baby Machines!
"Forty is the new 20 when it comes to having babies," says social psychologist Susan Newman. The trend of first-time older moms keeps rising, and now 40% of babies are born to women over 30. 1 in 7 are born to women over 35. And they're not stopping at one...
40% of women who had a first baby at age 35 or later have gone on to have at least one more.
There are a few good reasons for waiting, too. Research has proven older moms:
- have children with higher IQs and impressive early vocabulary
- have children that are less apt to need hospitalization or have accidents
- tend to live longer - perhaps even to 100
- are typically better educated than young moms

Show This to Your Boss!
A new study found that pregnant women who work straight up to their due date are more likely to have a baby with a lower birth weight. The study found working up to the due date is equal to smoking throughout the entire pregnancy. The weight difference was about a 1/2 pound less compared to women that stopped working between 6 and 8 months.
You can only guess where this is going -- and you'd be right. The author of the study wants governments to give incentives for employers to offer more flexible maternity leave.
"We need to think seriously about parental leave, because - as this study suggests - the possible benefits of taking leave flexibly before the birth could be quite high"
Personal: My wife is an TV news anchor who did the entire 11pm newscast with contractions every 8 minutes. Only the woman that did the weather picked up on what was going on. I was waiting at the station, behind the scenes for the show to end, and when it did, I drove her to the hospital... but we ended up waiting another 12 hours.
Video of the Day
They're calling this "the worst National Anthem rendition ever." I could only take it for 12 seconds. See if you can last longer
Best YouTube comment: "There is a point when parental support needs to be denied. Who is lying to this little girl that she sounds good?"
