I listen to everything, from industry shows (best-of's from radio shows) to extremely niche shows (podcasts about podcasting, for example). The so-called amateur, who produced a podcast from his bedroom 5-years ago, is now an extremely savvy and professional sounding host still doing the show from his bedroom, but making actual money from what used to be just a hobby!
I took a look at my "favorites" from Stitcher (which is a must-have-app for your smart phone, and thought I'd pass a 3 along that you may find of interest.
So here's round one of "3 Podcasts You Should be Listening To"
The Adam Carolla Show
You have to respect a man that turned down a multi-million dollar deal to forge ahead with a podcast network he calls "the pirate ship." Adam, if you don't remember, was one-half of The Man Show on Comedy Central, and later hosted his own syndicated morning show (picking up the slack after Howard Stern went to Sirius). It was about that time he became a contestant on Dancing With the Stars, hosted a variety of cable shows, and most recently competed on The Celebrity Apprentice. He's a comedy genius. Crude, yes. But after investing a year with his show, I can truly say I'm in awe of his talent. He does a 90 minute, full service (news, guests, contests, calls, etc) podcast Monday through Friday. It's exactly what you would get on the radio, without those pesky FCC restrictions. He has now become the most downloaded podcast in the world, and turned down a sweet deal from a radio network (what he said was a 3-hour nightly syndicated radio show for 3-million) to keep what he started going. That's bold. That's Adam. (click link above)
Mancow
There is only one Mancow, and there's something about his style that gets me excited and pumped up to be on the radio. I can't do what The Mancow does, but I've learned that a little extra audio can do wonders for a bit. He's one man (with a team of producers, yes), but his show sounds big. Really big. He has a premium side to his website to download full shows, but he also offers up 10 minutes a day free. Just search for it on Stitcher, or hit the link above for more info.
The Podcast Answer Man
Yes, this is podcast about podcasting. Geeky? Maybe. But here's a guy that ditched his very safe and very lucrative career so he could stay at home and podcast all day. How has that worked out for him? Cliff Ravenscroft makes over six-figures a year podcasting. His Podcast Answer Man Show serves up tips to anyone that thinks they have something to offer to the world. Tips about picking out home equipment to picking out a podcast theme. And even though I don't do a podcast (at this time...stay tuned!), I have learned a great deal from Mr. Ravenscroft that has transferred over to the radio. The biggest thing I've learned is how to turn a few listeners into an army. Treat them like kings and queens and they'll go to work for you. This is especially helpful to those of us without a lot of marking $$$ coming our way. Anyway, give it a listen... you may enjoy it. (click link above)
Ok, there they are, the first three in a series of blogposts about podcasts you may enjoy. If you have one that you seem to enjoy, send it my way, I'd love to give it a listen!
