Another parenting list to make us all feel like screw-ups. 5 myths when it comes to raising a child. (insert blog address here)

Parenting Myths
This is interesting -- I always love to find articles proving I'm just an idiot when it comes to raising my child. The book "Nurtureshock: New Thinking About Children" pretty much destroys most assumptions about kids. Here are 5:
  1. Lying -- Does punishing a kid when he lies will teach him to tell the truth? Not so fast. Kids lie to please you, so the best way to get them to stop lying is to say "it would make me really happy if you told me the truth."
  2. Self Esteem -- Will praising a child boost self confidence? Apparently telling your kid they did great on a test sends the signal that any mistake they make is to be avoided at all costs.
  3. Smarts -- Can you tell if you have a genius early on? Not really. For every 100 kindergartners shown to be gifted using standard tests, only 27 are still considered so by the third grade.
  4. Educational TV -- Those cartoons about good behavior on PBS teach good lessons, right? Nope. Kids can't connect the lesson they're supposed learn by the end of the show.  All they see are a series of behaviors - especially the bad ones.
  5. Bullying -- all name calling and teasing should be banned, right? Nope. Teasing and even ignoring kids on the playground is normal.

Bacon-Wrapped Hot Dogs!
Found a great idea for your party this Sunday - and super easy, too. Bacon-Wrapped Hot Dogs! Babble.com breaks it down, all you need are:
  • 4 beef hot dogs
  • 2 slices of bacon
  • 1/2 cup honey bbq sauce
  • Chopped onions, mustard, relish

From Babble.com: "Slice the bacon in half lengthwise. Wrap one of the strips of bacon around each hot dog. Place on a cookie sheet and bake in an oven preheated to 400 degrees for 20-25 minutes, or until the bacon is crispy and the hot dog is browned. Serve on hot dog buns with your favorite toppings" Oh my, this is just lovely.

Take a guess -- girls who do (this) with dad are happier. Dad's will sure be pleased to hear this news... (insert blog address)

Fire Up the PS3!
Just because you have a little girl, dad, doesn't mean you need to trade in your Xbox for Barbie's Dream House. I love this study out of BYU that found girls who play age-appropriate games with their father are "better behaved, felt more connected to their families, were less aggressive and less likely to be depressed."

What about boys? Nope, doesn't make a difference and it's mostly because boys spend many more hours playing games that are (mostly) age inappropriate. In fact, the more boys play video games, the worse they do in school, and are generally unhappier.  Oh, and it makes them LOUSY behind the wheel (see Did You Know below) Read more about it here!

Birthday Quiz

She's 57 today, believe it or not...

Answer

Christie Brinkley! Last month she told Prevention magazine that finding love is "not my number one priority." She has three kids that take up all of her time. "It's a lot of work," she says. "Most of the time, I've got my kids with me, so I'm not as prone to meeting people."

Did You Know...

...that gamers are PRETTY BAD behind the wheel? 2,000 drivers were studied. Half were gamers who said gaming taught them to have better skills behind the wheel. 44% admitted, though, they took risks behind the wheel. 21% of non-gamers said the same thing. 45% of gamers admit to road rage while only 22% of non-gamers did. And finally, 26% of gamers said their driving scares people. Only 11% of non-gamers admitted the same thing. Should insurance companies start asking if you have an Xbox at home?

Joke Of the Day

A Kindergarten teacher was observing her classroom of children
while they drew. She asked one little girl what she was working on,
and she replied, "I'm drawing God." The teacher paused and said, "But no one
knows what God looks like." Without missing a beat, or looking
up from her drawing, the girl replied, "They will in a minute."

You've got Vera Wang taste on a Walmart budget with a dress-to-impress wedding coming up. What to do? That was the question to Harvard Business School grads set out to answer and came up with an online business called Rent the Runway.
